The National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences is pleased to announce the Seventh Annual Mathematical Field of Dreams Conference, held this year at the Phoenix East/Mesa Hilton Hotel in Mesa, Arizona. The Conference brings together faculty in the mathematical sciences and students who are from backgrounds which are underrepresented in those fields.

This year the Field of Dreams Conference for 2013 will offer several new programs for students to assist them as they continue their education in the math sciences.  The first program (The uniform Admissions Program) is geared towards predoctoral students that are ready to begin their doctoral studies.  During the conference they will meet with a faculty facilitator, revise their personal statement and apply to a graduate program during the Field of Dreams Conference.  The second program is for predoctoral students that would like a summer experience in an REU.  We are hoping that they will be able to secure the information they need and actually sign up for these programs during the conference. Priority will be given to students that are eligible to apply to either of these programs.  Please keep this in mind as you nominate your students.

Predoctoral Scholars:

You will have the opportunity to learn about the ins and outs of applying for - and thriving in - a graduate program in the math sciences. Our Alliance Doctoral Student panel will discuss their graduate experience. They will talk about strategies for success, and how to pick a graduate program which will welcome, support and mentor you throughout your graduate studies. Our Alliance Mentors will share with you what they look for when admitting a graduate student, what undergraduate courses are essential to your success in grad school and what their expectations are upon entering their program.  Our Alliance Doctoral Alumni Panel will share their wisdom with you and tell you about their different career paths and the positives and negatives of each. You will also have the opportunity to meet with faculty and students from individual Alliance Graduate Program Groups (GPGs) during our Graduate Fair.

Doctoral Scholars:

This is a great opportunity to meet other Alliance Grad students and to share your work and your goals. You will also have the opportunity to meet Alliance Graduate Faculty and to learn about our Postdoc program.

Faculty and Corporate Partners:

Our Conference is an opportunity for faculty to discuss common research interests and to form research partnerships. It gives Alliance Graduate Mentors an opportunity to get to know some of the most promising undergraduate students in the math sciences today. It is also an opportunity for faculty who would like to know more about the Alliance to learn, first hand, about our goals and activities. Finally, the Alliance welcomes representatives of government agencies and industry who are interested in meeting our community of students and faculty. Faculty can reserve their room by visiting the Phoenix East/Mesa Hilton Hotel Field of Dreams Conference site.

How to Apply for the Field of Dreams Conference

Predoctoral Scholars:

Attendance to the conference is by invitation only and is limited to Alliance Scholars. Priority will be given to those students who are eligible to enter a graduate program in the quantitative sciences in the fall and are ready to apply to a graduate program during the Field of Dreams Conference and those students that are interested in applying to a summer REU.   Other students may apply and will be supported as funds allow. Students in an MS program at an institution which does not offer a doctoral program are also welcome. If you are selected to attend, we will pay for your travel and local expenses. Students must be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents to apply.

If you are interested in attending this conference, please ask your Alliance Mentor to nominate you. If you are not presently an Alliance Scholar and would like to become one, please contact us at mathalliance@uiowa.edu.

The deadline for applying is September 3! However, we will start making our selections on August 16 and these slots will fill up quickly. So be sure to apply as soon as possible!
